Style guide for petite girls

There are so many style guides out there telling you how to look thinner and smaller, but so few telling you how to look bigger! The petite girls have it all right? They never have to worry; anything they wear will probably suit them. But ask any petite girl, and she will tell you how hard it is for her to shop, how hard it is not to look even smaller than she is or find clothes in her size. Looking feminine and sophisticated can be a challenge, as almost everything they wear can put them squarely in the “cute” category.

The first, most important tip any petite girl can follow is to adopt a Monochromatic dressing style, i.e. only one color from head to toe. Dark colors especially, as they help you look longer. Wear fitted garments that accentuate your shape. Avoid baby-doll, girly, ruffled looks, busy plaids and florals as they add unnecessary bulk and breadth. Instead, opt for garments with vertical lines to add length to you torso. One of the easiest and most effective ways to appear taller is to wear V-necked tops or jackets. Chose pants and jeans based on fit around the hips. Keep them as straight as possible, to elongate the legs as much as you can. Avoid cuffs, bulky pockets, or pleats. When wearing skirts or shorts, it is good idea to avoid the mini look, unless you have really amazing legs. A mini skirt will stop at exactly the broadest part of the thighs, making the legs look bigger than they are. Knee-length or just above the knee is a better look, as it makes the legs look longer. It goes without saying, heels are the petite girl’s best friends, and you should have the appropriate block, wedge or pencil for every occasion. Keep your accessories as small as possible. Irrespective of the current oversized handbags and glares trend, petite women should stick to medium sizes, lest they drown in their accessories.

Finally, it is not exactly fashion advice, but practical – find yourself a great tailor. Petite girls have to alter everything! Even the smallest sizes in most brands won’t fit them, and they find themselves shopping in the teen section of a mall. But with the assistance of a great tailor, you can make any piece of clothing seem like it was custom made for you!
